For young novice drivers

Young drivers who have just passed their driving test are most at risk of being involved in a road traffic accident whilst driving on the roads than any other road user group.

Young drivers are the drivers of the future and are often involved in accidents due to their lack of experience, maturity, knowledge or simply a poor attitude to driving. Passing the driving test is the first stage in learning to drive safely.

The national Pass Plus scheme has been in operation for more than a decade and provides post-test training in the form of 6 practical modules with no tests at the end of the training. The cost of doing Pass Plus training in Cumberland currently averages around £160 and is provided by local driving instructors.

We strongly believe in the Pass Plus scheme so much that we will contribute £100 towards its cost in the form of a voucher, subject to the following conditions:

  • you must be a resident of Cumberland
  • register within 12 months of passing your test
  • be aged between 17 and 24 inclusive at the time
  • you must use a DfT registered driving instructor that is willing to provide Pass Plus training

If you wish to undertake Pass Plus please provide the following:

  • your full name
  • your town or village
  • date of birth
  • driving test pass date
  • a copy of the photo card of your full driving license or the DVSA 10 Practical Driving Test pass certificate

Once the documents have been seen, the copies will be destroyed.

In return you will be sent a £100 voucher to be used towards the cost of doing Pass Plus training which your chosen driving instructor will redeem with us upon completion. The voucher is valid for a period of 6 months from the completion of registration.

To apply please send an email to roadsafety@cumberland.gov.uk

For older drivers

As we get older our risk of being involved in a road traffic accident increases. Simply put, all those years of experience and driving safely begin to be overwhelmed by the inevitable effects of ageing.

Older drivers - Age UK

Cumberland Council will subsidise, via the provider, those older drivers that are aged 70+ and that would like to undertake training to refresh their skills and knowledge through thee IAM or RoSPA providers by £100.

Please ask the provider to contact roadsafety@cumberland.gov.uk when this training has been arranged.

For primary age road users

Pedestrian safety

The CRSP would like each pupil in primary school in Cumberland, where possible, to receive a pedestrian road safety session when at either year one or two. These imaginative play sessions make road safety both memorable and fun.

These sessions provided by Pyjama Drama emphasise the following:

  • the dangers of traffic
  • the long established Green Cross Code
  • the use of islands and crossings
  • walking on roads without kerbs
  • the use of hi-viz clothing

Cycle safety

Bikeability is an accredited national training programme to provide the skills and confidence for pupils to navigate the roads safely via bicycle. Cumberland Council runs an extensive programme throughout the academic year, and all schools are offered Bikeability training which progresses from Level 1 to Level 3.

Find out more about Bikeability on the Active Cumbria website

For motorcyclists

The CRSP wants bikers to enjoy everything that Cumberland has to offer, but most of all we want them to return home safely. Motorcyclists are very vulnerable and safe riding skills are therefore vital.

You may wish therefore to undertake RoSPA or IAM post-test training with a local provider. The CRSP currently subsidises the cost of this training by £100. Please contact one of the following providers to ensure this meets your requirements and to register.

Once registered the provider will notify the Partnership and you can then proceed with your training and the provider will claim their subsidy from Cumberland Council upon completion.
