Pass Plus: £150 Driver Training Subsidy for Young Drivers in Westmorland and Furness

Westmorland and Furness Council offers a subsidy of £150 towards the cost of completing a Pass Plus course to help newly qualified drivers build confidence, gain valuable experience and stay safer on the road.

Passing your driving test is a major achievement, but experience comes with time. Young drivers are more likely to be involved in collisions during their first years on the road, which is why Westmorland and Furness Council is helping newly qualified drivers gain additional experience through Pass Plus.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical training course delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) after you have passed your driving test.

The course includes a minimum of six hours' additional training and is tailored to help newly qualified drivers gain experience in a range of situations, including:

Rural roads
Town and urban driving
Driving at night
Driving in poor weather conditions
Dual carriageways and higher-speed roads
Independent and safer driving skills

There is no test at the end of the course. Your instructor will support you to develop the knowledge, awareness and experience needed to stay safe on the road.

£150 Subsidy Available

Westmorland and Furness Council offers a subsidy of up to £150 towards the cost of completing a Pass Plus course with a participating instructor.

Funding is limited and vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for the subsidy, you must:

Be aged between 17 and 24 inclusive
Be a resident of Westmorland and Furness
Apply within 12 months of passing your practical driving test

How to Apply

Please email the following information to roadsafety@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk:

Full name
Address
Date of birth
Date you passed your practical driving test

You should also attach either:

A copy of your photocard driving licence, or
A copy of your DVSA Practical Driving Test Pass Certificate

Once your eligibility has been confirmed, a voucher will be issued for use towards your Pass Plus training.

Supporting Safer Young Drivers

This initiative supports wider road safety activity across Cumbria, including enforcement and education campaigns that focus on reducing collisions involving young drivers and the 'Fatal Four' contributory factors: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and driver distraction.

By gaining additional experience and developing safer driving habits early, newly qualified drivers can build the skills and confidence needed for a lifetime of safer driving.
